Description:

A tornado hit Thaa Atoll Thimarafushi last night toppling a wall and breaking a light pole in its path. However, no one was injured in the incident. Thaa Atoll Council revealed that the tornado had hit the north side of Thimarafushi toppling a wall of a house and blown off a roof of one other. It had also damaged the north side fence of the football ground of the island while a light pole had been broken in two in its wake. Council member Hassan Zareer revealed that a 36 foot long and 12 foot high wall next door had been razed to the ground by the tornado that hit the island around 7:00pm. "I was at home when I heard a crash. The fence and the pole had been broken in two," Hassan said relaying the incident. According to him few people had been on the streets at the time the tornado hit the island. "Most people had returned to their homes after Isha prayers. If not it was likely that the wall might have collapsed on top of someone," he said. The heavy rains in the country has also affected Thimarafushi. However, Hassan said that the weather had not been too bad yesterday though it was cloudy during most parts of the day. Two tornadoes had hit two separate islands in Addu while several islands had been flooded due to the relentless rain in the country at present.
